Les Murrell is an experienced Dog Handler who joined CK9 in July 2023. With an impressive 20-year career in this field, Les brings a wealth of expertise to our team.

Before joining CK9, Les worked as a dog handler/trainer in HM Prison Service. His journey
began in 2003 at HMP Onley, where he worked with drug detection dogs, primarily Labradors
and Springer Spaniels, as part of a small, successful team. Their accomplishments were
recognised in 2006 when they won the prestigious Sir Richard Tilt award for the best detection
team in the country at the National Dog Trials.

In 2008, Les transferred to HMP Woodhill, where he became a Patrol Dog handler, working with
German Shepherd Dogs to assist staff on the wings and patrol both internally and externally to
prevent escape attempts. His dedication and skills led him to participate in various national dog
trials and earn third place at the Joint Services Dog Trials in 2013 with his German Shepherd.
Les continued to grow professionally and became a fully qualified Initial Patrol Dog Trainer and
Continuation Trainer in 2014. Over the years, he participated in the National Dog Trials and, in
2019, was invited to become a judge, further exemplifying his expertise in the field.

In 2019, Les rejoined HMP Onley as a Drug Detection Dog handler, working with Labradors and
Spaniels. He successfully completed a Continuation Trainer qualification in 2021, allowing him
to train dog handlers across the East Midlands area.
At CK9, Les undertakes a range of duties, including exercising dogs, puppy socializing, and
obedience training. Additionally, he plays a key role in maintaining the grounds to a high
standard. Les is also responsible for collecting and delivering clients’ dogs as required, ensuring
their safety and comfort.

Les is passionate about his job and loves the opportunity to work with dogs and utilixe all of his
skills. Being part of an enthusiastic team of like-minded people and working outdoors adds to
his enjoyment.

His love for animals and the opportunity to work outside attracted Les to this rewarding career.
Alongside his extensive experience, Les holds various relevant qualifications, including HM
Prison Service Initial and Continuation Trainer certifications for Patrol Dogs and Drug Detection
and IBAD (illicitly brewed alcohol). He is also trained in Canine First Aid and is a qualified First
Aider as of 2023.
